Anki is the best free spaced-repetition software ever written, and we cheerfully use its scheduling algorithm. The problem was never the algorithm — it is that Anki needs you to build the cards and then remember to open the app. Notewell does both of those for you.

What Anki actually is
Anki is free, open-source spaced-repetition software that has been maintained since 2006. It is desktop-first with official Android and web clients; the iOS app (AnkiMobile) is a paid one-time purchase that funds the project. You build the cards, you choose the deck structure, you flip the card and rate your own recall from Again to Easy. Its scheduler now defaults to FSRS, a machine-learned successor to the SM-2 family.

Anki's default scheduler learns from your review history rather than applying a fixed formula. We use SM-2 and say so on our homepage; on pure scheduling sophistication, Anki is ahead.

If you are studying for USMLE or a language with a well-trodden deck, someone has already done thousands of hours of card-writing for you. Notewell has nothing equivalent.

Can you use both?
Yes, and plenty of people should. Keep Anki for the shared decks and the material you have already invested in, and put Notewell on the things you keep meaning to review but never build cards for — meeting notes, papers, a language you are learning from your own notes. They are not mutually exclusive, and Notewell does not import or alter your Anki collection.
Questions people ask
Is Notewell just a paid Anki?
No. Anki is a queue you visit; Notewell is a question that arrives. The generation from your existing notes, the delivery over email and messaging, and the AI grading of a written answer are the differences — the spaced-repetition scheduling underneath is deliberately conventional.
Does Notewell use the same algorithm as Anki?
Notewell uses SM-2, the algorithm Anki was originally built on and still supports. Anki now defaults to FSRS, which is more sophisticated. We think the bigger win is getting reviews to happen at all, but on scheduling alone Anki has the edge.
Can I import my Anki decks into Notewell?
Not today. Notewell generates questions from your notes rather than importing existing decks. If your material already lives in an Anki deck, Anki remains the better home for it.
Why would I pay when Anki is free?
You would not, if Anki is working for you. Notewell is for people whose Anki habit lapsed — the cost is buying back the card-writing time and the daily discipline. One collection is free forever, so you can find out before paying anything.
Does Notewell work offline?
No. Generation and grading run server-side, so a connection is required. Anki is the right choice if offline use matters to you.
